Wilton Cake Decorating Course 1 Supplies

Since graduating from Wilton cake decorating class course 1, I can say it was worth every cent and here's why.

Wilton Cake Decorating Course was a Blast!

Oh man, where should I start? This course was a challenge and I can say this, I have learned so much from baking and business thanks to my Instructor Andrew who not only taught me the lessons to course 1 but went even a step further. I thought because of my background in art and design it would have been less challenging but it was the total opposite.

WILTON CAKE DECORATING CLASS COURSE 1: CERTIFICATE DAY - I DID IT!

It took me two months to complete this course due to the holiday season and repeating a class. If you haven't read Michael's Basic Wilton Cake Decorating Course 101 –Part 1 review please click here.

Was it worth it? Absolutely! and it was great to get out of the house for a couple hours! Since taking the class I have helped Melissa with a few of her decoration items for some of her clients.

 How much were the supplies?

Aside from the fees and materials, I did purchase a few more tools.
During the course of the class, Wilton/ Michael's tries to sell you some of their other tools, which is to be expected but some of the tools are actually useful. There are some tools I would have bought but Melissa already has most of them in her kitchen. Some of the tools I purchased later on (first day of course 1, Building buttercream Kit was sold out) for course one.

These are the supplies of course 1:

  • Wilton® Decorating Basics Student Kit:$17.99 (Clearance special) reg $34.99
  • The Wilton® Method of Cake Decorating® Course 1 Student Guide: $2.99 (Clearance special) Reg $4.99

Building Buttercream Kit

  • 12 Rose Template Stickers
  • 9 in. (22.8cm) Angled Spatula
  • Decorator Brush
  • 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) Flower Nail
  • 12 Decorating Tips: Bismarck 230; Drop Flower 2D; Open Star 1M; Specialty 233; Petal 104; Round 12; Open Star 21, 18; Leaf 352; Open Star 16; Round 3, 1
  • 4 Standard Couplers
  • 12-12 in. (30.4cm) Disposable Decorating Bags
  • 6-15 in.  (38.1 cm) Parchment Triangles
  • Practice Board and Practice Sheets
  • Practice Board Stand

What did I Learn in Course 1

My skilled certified Wilton Method instructor taught me each step how to:

  • Icing the right consistency to decorate
  • Filling and using a piping Bag
  • Icing and decorating a cake
  • Filling and covering a cake
  • How to make  a cake smooth using hot water
  • Icing and decorating cupcakes
  • Piping and make simple borders, letter and shapes on your cake
  • Make six different buttercream icing flowers
  • Transfer images to cake decorate

I Learned More Than Just Decorating

I was also given business tips on how much to charge for my cakes, consign them in local cafes, restaurants and other shops that sell food and much more. He actually went beyond just teaching the skill of designing cakes.

Don't Stop Learning

Cake designs can get expensive. After completing course 1, I decided to take course 2. With Melissa's help,I am able to practice and learn through online courses, such as YouTube videos like How To Cake it with Yolanda Gampp,MyCupcakeAddiction, or Wilton and Creativebug courses.

As I watch Melissa go from making this a hobby to a lucrative business, I understand the value I just received from taking  Wilton's Cake Decorating courses.

The good thing is you can buy course 1 to course 3 kits and never have to worry about buying any of the basic items, as the items in the kit  should last you for a couple of years. That'sa huge saving for a beginner which can save you money in the long term.

This is the End

Recently Wilton decided to end the Wilton decorating classes due to online competition.Michael's will no longer have these class available after March 31, 2018. If you do wish to learn before classes end contact your local Michael's store near you or go online andregister by clicking here.

This was a disappointment, as this was a great course for hands-on learning.

If you live in the Tri-State area or in Brooklyn, NY, I would highly recommend you to contact my Instructor Andrew. You can direct message (DM) at@drewlivscakes on Instagram.
